Lifestyle Review
What is a lifestyle review?
A lifestyle review is a structured, private appointment that looks at the key areas of your health and how your day-to-day habits are influencing them. Unlike a standard GP appointment focused on a single complaint, a lifestyle review is designed to give you the full picture — identifying risks, explaining results and helping you make sustainable changes.
It is suitable for people who feel something isn’t quite right but don’t have a specific medical complaint, those who want to take a proactive approach to their health, and anyone looking for personalised guidance on diet, weight, fatigue, fitness or general wellbeing.

Blood tests during your lifestyle review
Blood tests are not automatically included in the consultation fee but can be requested at the same appointment — results are typically available the next working day. The following tests are commonly recommended as part of a lifestyle review:
| Test | What it checks | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full blood count (FBC) | Red cells, white cells, platelets, haemoglobin | Screens for anaemia, infection and immune function |
| HbA1c | Average blood sugar over 3 months (mmol/mol) | Early detection of pre-diabetes (42–47 mmol/mol) and type 2 diabetes (48 mmol/mol or above) |
| Lipid profile (cholesterol) | Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides | Cardiovascular disease risk assessment |
| Thyroid function (TSH, free T4) | Thyroid hormone levels | Common cause of fatigue, weight gain and low mood |
| Vitamin D | 25-OH vitamin D level (nmol/L) | Deficiency is very common and affects energy, mood and immunity |
| Vitamin B12 & folate | B vitamin levels | Deficiency causes fatigue, nerve symptoms and anaemia |
| Ferritin (iron stores) | Iron storage levels | Low ferritin is a frequent cause of fatigue even without anaemia |
| Liver function tests (LFTs) | Liver enzymes and proteins | Affected by alcohol, diet and some medications |
| Kidney function (U&Es) | Kidney filtration, sodium, potassium | Important baseline, especially with hypertension or medications |
| CRP (inflammation marker) | C-reactive protein | Indicates systemic inflammation linked to lifestyle and chronic disease |
| Testosterone (males) | Total testosterone (nmol/L) | Low testosterone causes fatigue, low mood and reduced libido |

What happens at the appointment?
Your lifestyle review takes place at our clinic in Estover, Plymouth, in a private consultation room. The appointment is unhurried — we do not operate a 10-minute clock. Your clinician will begin by asking about your health background and current concerns, then work through the key areas of your lifestyle in a structured conversation.
If you would like blood tests, these can be taken at the same appointment. You will leave with a clear verbal summary and, where helpful, written notes or a plan. Follow-up appointments can be booked to review blood test results and track progress.
Frequently asked questions
How is a lifestyle review different from a health screening?
A health screening focuses on clinical measurements and test results — it is an objective snapshot of your health data. A lifestyle review is a broader conversation that interprets those results in the context of your daily habits, goals and circumstances. The two complement each other well and can be combined into a single appointment.
Do I need to have blood tests as part of the appointment?
No — blood tests are optional and charged separately. Some people come for the consultation and lifestyle discussion only, and decide whether to add tests afterwards. Others prefer to do both at the same appointment for a more complete picture. Your AP will make a recommendation based on your situation.
Can I bring a list of my concerns?
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Writing down what you want to discuss beforehand helps make the most of your appointment time and ensures nothing is missed. There is no limit on the number of topics you can raise during a lifestyle review appointment.
Will I get a written plan or summary?
Where relevant, your AP will provide written notes, recommendations or a summary for you to take away. Blood test results are provided with a clinical commentary — we don’t just send numbers, we explain what they mean for you.
How often should I have a lifestyle review?
For most people, once a year is a useful rhythm — similar to an MOT. If you are actively working on a health goal (weight loss, fitness, managing a diagnosis), a follow-up appointment every 3–6 months allows you to track progress and adjust your plan.
Can I get a prescription at a lifestyle review?
Yes, if clinically appropriate. Our APs are independent prescribers. If your appointment identifies something that would benefit from medication — for example, a supplement deficiency confirmed by blood test — your AP can prescribe at the same visit.
Is this appointment suitable for men’s and women’s health?
Yes. We offer lifestyle reviews for all adults. For women, we can include discussion of hormonal health, menopause, contraception and cycle-related concerns. For men, we can include testosterone assessment, prostate awareness, cardiovascular risk and men’s mental health — all within the same appointment.
Do I need to be registered with Tamar Health?
No — you can book and attend without being a registered patient. You remain with your NHS GP for ongoing NHS care. Tamar Health is an independent private clinic that anyone can access directly.
