Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
PMOS, still widely known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is one of the most common hormonal conditions in women of reproductive age, and it often goes undiagnosed for years. Symptoms vary a lot from one woman to the next: irregular periods, weight that’s hard to shift, acne, excess hair growth, hair thinning, or trouble conceiving. Blood tests are a key part of working out what’s behind it and building an accurate hormonal picture.
We offer one comprehensive PMOS Screen, covering the core hormonal, metabolic and thyroid markers used in assessment, all from a single appointment and one blood draw. Your sample is processed by Nationwide Pathology, our UKAS-accredited laboratory partner, with results back the next working day.
Every price is all-inclusive. The phlebotomy appointment fee is already built in, so there is nothing extra to pay on the day.
What the PMOS Screen covers
Thirteen markers, chosen to give a proper hormonal and metabolic picture rather than a single number to interpret in isolation.
- Testosterone: checks for androgen excess
- Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG): carries Testosterone in your blood
- Free Androgen Index (FAI): the bioavailable share of your Testosterone
- DHEA Sulphate: an adrenal androgen marker
- Luteinising Hormone (LH): pituitary hormone, and the LH to FSH ratio is a key marker
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH): pituitary hormone
- Oestradiol: your oestrogen level
- Prolactin: can mimic PMOS symptoms if it is raised
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): rules out an underactive or overactive thyroid
- Free Thyroxine (FT4): checked alongside TSH for the fuller thyroid picture
- HbA1c: your longer-term blood glucose marker
- Insulin: raised levels can point to insulin resistance
- Full Blood Count: a general health baseline
Ask us about fasting when you book, and timing matters for some markers. We may ask you to avoid eating for a few hours beforehand for the most accurate Insulin result, so mention it at booking and we will advise. LH, FSH and Oestradiol are also best tested on day 2 to 5 of your cycle, since that is when they give the clearest picture. If your cycles are irregular, or you are not having periods at the moment, that is fine too: testing can be done any time, just mention it when you book and we will advise. What the results can tell you
A PMOS diagnosis is made on clinical grounds. Blood tests are one part of the picture, alongside your symptoms and often a pelvic ultrasound too, but they are essential for:
- Confirming androgen excess: raised Testosterone or FAI shows up in most women with PMOS and helps confirm the diagnosis
- Checking the LH to FSH ratio: a ratio above 2 to 1 is a classic feature, though not everyone with PMOS has it
- Ruling out other causes: thyroid problems and raised Prolactin can look very similar, so it is worth excluding them
- Assessing insulin resistance: common in PMOS and important for managing your health over the long term
Clinical review included. Once your results are ready, a clinician reviews them and emails you a clear summary in plain English. If anything needs urgent attention we will contact you the same day, and a follow-up appointment is always available if you would like to talk it through in more depth.
Ongoing monitoring
PMOS is usually a long-term condition to manage rather than a one-off diagnosis, and once you are on treatment it is worth rechecking key markers from time to time to see how things are responding. That might mean repeating the full PMOS Screen, or just the markers most relevant to you, such as Insulin, HbA1c or Thyroid Function. Your clinician can advise on what to retest and when, based on your treatment and how you are getting on.

Attend. Come to Tor Clinical Rooms, 3 Darklake View, Estover, Plymouth PL6 7TL, with free parking on site. Pay the balance before your draw. Follow any fasting guidance we gave you at booking. Most blood draws take five to ten minutes.
Results. Your sample goes to Nationwide Pathology, our UKAS-accredited laboratory partner, by tracked post the same day. Results are usually back the next working day, by email with a written clinician summary explaining what they mean.
