Why test

Problems are often found late.

Your liver handles medicines and alcohol and makes proteins. Your kidneys filter waste and balance salts and fluid. Both can be affected for years before you notice.

Testing makes sense if you drink regularly, take long-term medicine such as a statin, or have high blood pressure or diabetes.

Your results

What your results mean.

One slightly raised result is often not serious. Medicines, recent illness, dehydration and hard exercise can all affect these markers for a short time, so we may suggest a repeat test.

If results are clearly abnormal, we explain what they may mean and whether you need your GP or a specialist.

Blood tests give information. They do not diagnose a condition on their own. We explain your results in the context of your symptoms, medicines and history.

Your results

What does a raised ALT or Gamma GT mean?

Often fatty liver, alcohol or a medicine side effect. A single raised result is often not serious, but one that stays raised needs looking into.

I am on a statin. Should I have my liver checked?

A yearly liver check is sensible on long-term statins. Problems are rare, but it is good reassurance.

Will my GP accept these results?

Yes. GPs routinely act on private blood test results.
