Iron Profile / Anaemia

What does this test check?

This test looks at iron stores and iron transport in the body. Iron is essential for oxygen transport and energy production.

What is measured?

Ferritin

Serum iron

Transferrin

Transferrin saturation

Optional measurement of B12, CRP, and folate are in the more complete Anaemia profile.

Why should I test this?

If you are experiencing tiredness or ongoing fatigue, breathlessness, hair loss, or pale skin, which can be signs of reduced iron levels. It is also commonly requested by people with heavy menstrual bleeding or dietary considerations, including a vegetarian or vegan diet, where iron intake or absorption may be reduced. In addition, the test is used to monitor known iron deficiency or iron overload and to assess response to treatment over time.

The Anaemia profile includes b12 and costs £61.

A more basic iron studies which includes Iron, Ferritin, Transferrin and Transferrin Saturation, is available for £37, but this does not look at b12, folate or CRP levels.
