Ear Wax Removal in Plymouth: Microsuction Explained

A blocked ear is one of those small problems that quietly takes over your day – muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, sometimes ringing or mild dizziness. The good news is it’s usually quick and easy to put right. At Tamar Health in Plymouth we clear ear wax using microsuction, widely regarded as the safest and most comfortable method.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction uses a gentle medical suction device and a magnified view of your ear canal to lift wax away carefully. Unlike old-fashioned ear syringing, no water is flushed into the ear, which makes it:

Cleaner and more precise, suitable for people with a history of ear problems or perforations, usually quick, with immediate relief, carried out under direct vision, so it’s controlled and safe.

Signs your ears may be blocked with wax

Common signs include dulled or muffled hearing, a sense of pressure or fullness, earache, itchiness, ringing (tinnitus), or your own voice sounding odd. Wax build-up is completely normal – some people simply produce more, and cotton buds often make it worse by pushing wax deeper.

Softening drops help. Using olive oil or a pharmacy ear-drop for a few days beforehand softens the wax and makes removal quicker and more comfortable. It’s worth doing, but not essential.

What to expect at your appointment

A member of our clinical team will examine both ears, explain what they can see, and remove the wax by microsuction. Most appointments are straightforward and you’ll usually notice the difference straight away. If your ears are clear or the cause turns out to be something else, we’ll tell you honestly and advise on next steps.

All appointments are booked in advance – a quick, comfortable visit to sort a frustrating problem.
