AMH test · Plymouth
An AMH test, explained properly.
AMH gives an idea of how many eggs you have left. Useful if you are planning a family later, thinking about egg freezing, or before fertility treatment. No GP referral needed.
What AMH is
A guide to your egg reserve.
AMH stands for Anti-Mullerian Hormone. It is made by the small follicles in your ovaries that hold developing eggs, so the level gives an idea of how many eggs you have left. This is often called your ovarian reserve.
Your egg reserve falls naturally with age, at different rates for different people. Knowing your AMH can help you plan, and it is one of the first tests fertility clinics use.

What is measured
What your result means.
| Result | What it suggests | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Low for your age | Fewer eggs left than average | Worth knowing if you are planning a family later. It does not mean you cannot get pregnant. |
| Within the range | About average for your age | Reassuring, but it does not predict whether you will get pregnant. |
| High for your age | More eggs than average | Usually good news. We explain what it means for you. |

What AMH cannot tell you
It does not measure egg quality.
It does not tell you whether you can get pregnant naturally right now.
Hormonal contraception can lower the result a little. Tell us if you use it.
Your results
What your results mean.
Your result comes with a plain English explanation of what it means for your age, and what it does and does not tell you.
If your AMH is low, or you have been trying for a while, we can talk through the next steps, including a referral to a fertility service.
Blood tests give information. They do not diagnose a condition on their own. We explain your results in the context of your symptoms, medicines and history.

Questions people ask
The things people most often ask before booking.
About AMH
Does a low AMH mean I cannot get pregnant?
No. Many people with a low AMH get pregnant naturally. It means you may have less time, so it can help you plan.
Does my contraception affect it?
Hormonal contraception can lower AMH a little. The result is still useful. Tell us what you use so we can take it into account.
Should I have other tests too?
If you have been trying for a while, the Hormone Blood Test, Thyroid and a general health check can help. We can suggest what is worth doing.
