Sore Throat: When Antibiotics Actually Help – and Where to Get Seen in Plymouth
Sore throats are one of autumn’s most common complaints – and one of the most misunderstood. Most are caused by viruses and get better on their own, which means antibiotics won’t touch them. But some are bacterial and do benefit from treatment. The trick is telling them apart, and that’s where being seen in person helps.
Most sore throats are viral
A sore throat that comes with a runny nose, cough and mild fever is almost always viral. It’ll usually ease within a week. Soothing measures work well: warm drinks, honey and lemon, lozenges, paracetamol or ibuprofen, and plenty of fluids.
Signs it might be bacterial
Features that make a bacterial cause (such as strep) more likely include: a sudden, severe sore throat with little or no cough, high fever, swollen tender glands in the neck, and white patches or pus on the tonsils. In these cases, a throat swab and treatment may be worthwhile.
Why guessing isn’t ideal
Taking antibiotics you don’t need won’t help and adds to resistance; missing a bacterial throat that does need treatment can prolong things. A quick examination – and a throat swab where appropriate – takes the guesswork out.
Seen in person, treated properly
Most private services can only talk to you remotely, but a throat needs looking at. At Tamar Health you’re seen in person by an Advanced Practitioner (AP) who can examine your throat, take a swab if needed, and prescribe antibiotics only when they’ll genuinely help.
Our autumn urgent appointments: in-person assessment, throat swabs and blood tests on site if needed, prescriptions issued on the day when clinically appropriate, three clinic sessions a week with limited waiting and same-day slots often available. All appointments are booked in advance.
Seek urgent help if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, are drooling, can’t open your mouth properly, or feel severely unwell – these need immediate attention.
