Chest Infections: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore This Autumn
A cold that settles onto your chest can turn into a chest infection – and while many clear up on their own, some need treatment. Because a chest genuinely needs to be listened to, this is one autumn illness where being seen in person really matters.
What a chest infection feels like
Chest infections often follow a cold or flu. Typical symptoms include a persistent cough (often bringing up green, yellow or brown phlegm), wheezing or breathlessness, chest tightness or discomfort, a raised temperature, and feeling generally rundown and achy.
When to get seen promptly
Get checked if you’re coughing up discoloured or blood-streaked phlegm, feel short of breath at rest, have chest pain, a high temperature that won’t come down, symptoms lasting beyond about three weeks, or you have asthma, COPD, diabetes or a weakened immune system.
These signs don’t always mean a serious infection, but they’re exactly the situations where a proper examination – listening to your chest, checking your oxygen and temperature – makes all the difference.
Why in-person assessment matters here
You simply can’t examine a chest down a phone line. Most private services only offer remote consultations; at Tamar Health you’re seen in person by an Advanced Practitioner (AP) who can listen to your chest, assess you properly, and act on what they find.
Our autumn urgent appointments: in-person examination, swabs and blood tests on site if needed, antibiotics or other treatment prescribed there and then when clinically appropriate, three clinic sessions a week with limited waiting and same-day slots often available. All appointments are booked in advance.
Call 999 if you have severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, chest pain that is severe or spreading, or you feel confused or very unwell. Don’t wait for an appointment.
