An Autumn Cough That Won’t Shift? When to Get Seen in Plymouth

As the weather cools, coughs are everywhere. Most are caused by ordinary viruses and settle on their own within two to three weeks – even if the cough itself lingers a little longer. But some coughs need a proper look, and it isn’t always easy to tell which is which from your sofa.

Coughs that usually settle on their own

A cough that comes with a cold, eases day by day, and isn’t stopping you sleeping or breathing comfortably is usually best managed with rest, fluids and time. Simple measures – honey, staying hydrated, keeping warm – genuinely help.

When it’s worth being seen

Consider getting checked if your cough: lasts more than three weeks, brings up discoloured or bloody phlegm, comes with a high temperature, breathlessness or chest pain, follows a cold but suddenly gets worse, or you have asthma, COPD or another lung condition that’s flaring.

These features don’t always mean something serious, but they’re worth assessing properly rather than guessing. A chest that’s listened to, and the right questions asked, often settles the matter quickly.

See a real clinician – in person

Most private services will only offer you a phone or video call. We think a cough deserves better. At Tamar Health you’re seen in person by an Advanced Practitioner (AP) who can actually examine you.

Our autumn urgent appointments: in-person assessment, three clinic sessions a week with limited waiting and same-day appointments often available, swabs and blood tests taken on site if needed, and any medication prescribed there and then if it’s clinically appropriate. All appointments are booked in advance.

If a cough is dragging on or you’re just not sure, it’s far better to have it looked at than to worry.
