Getting a timely NHS GP appointment in Plymouth can be genuinely difficult. If you need to be seen quickly, want more time to actually talk through your health, or have something you’d rather not wait weeks to address, a private consultation is a practical option. Here’s what private GP appointments in Plymouth look like, who sees you, and what they can actually do.

Who Are Advanced Practitioners?

At Tamar Health, consultations are carried out by Advanced Practitioners (APs) rather than traditional GPs. It’s worth explaining what that means, because a lot of people aren’t familiar with the role.

Advanced Practitioners are senior clinicians, typically from a nursing or paramedic background, who have completed additional postgraduate training to an advanced level. They are fully qualified to assess, diagnose, prescribe, and refer independently. For the vast majority of acute and routine presentations, they do exactly what a GP would do.

Regulated and accountable. Our Advanced Practitioners are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and work within a CQC registered clinic. Your consultation is a formal clinical encounter with proper documentation and a duty of care.

The AP model is increasingly used across NHS urgent care, minor illness services, and GP practices. It allows highly experienced clinicians to work at the top of their competence, which is good for patients.

What Can a Private Consultation Cover?

People come to Tamar Health for private consultations for a wide range of reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Urgent illness that can’t wait for an NHS appointment, infections, chest concerns, skin problems
  • Ongoing symptoms that haven’t been properly investigated or explained
  • A second opinion on a diagnosis or treatment plan
  • Prescriptions when timely access to a GP isn’t possible
  • Fit notes and medical certificates
  • Referrals to private specialists
  • Advice on managing a long-term condition
  • Results review and interpretation

If you’re not sure whether your concern is something we can help with, just get in touch and we’ll let you know.

For emergencies, always call 999 or go to A&E. Private clinics are not equipped for emergency care. If you’re experiencing chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, or serious injury, please call 999.

The Difference Time Makes

The standard NHS GP appointment is 10 minutes. In that window, a GP is expected to take a history, examine, assess, plan, document and often deal with more than one issue. It’s a lot, and it’s not always enough time to do it well.

Private consultations at Tamar Health are longer. That time makes a difference. You can actually explain what’s going on. Your clinician can listen properly, ask the right follow-up questions, and think clearly rather than working against a clock. For anything complex, or anything you’ve been worried about for a while, that matters.

Can a Private Clinician Prescribe?

Yes. Our Advanced Practitioners are independent prescribers, which means they can prescribe from the full formulary in the same way a GP can. If your consultation results in a prescription, it can usually be issued the same day, either electronically to a pharmacy of your choice or as a private prescription.

Can They Refer Me to a Specialist?

Yes. If your clinician believes you need to see a specialist, they can issue a private referral letter at the appointment. You can take this to a private consultant of your choice. If you later need to be referred back into NHS care, your private records can support that process.

Do I Need to Be Registered with Tamar Health?

No. You don’t need to register in advance or transfer from your NHS GP. You can simply book an appointment and come in. You keep your NHS registration exactly as it is. Private and NHS care run in parallel, so using a private clinic for one appointment doesn’t affect your NHS entitlements in any way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We often have same-day or next-day appointments available. You can check availability and book directly online.

Will my NHS GP know I’ve been seen privately?

Only if you want them to. We can send a summary letter to your NHS GP if you’d find that useful for continuity of care, but we won’t do so without your consent.

Can I get a sick note from a private clinic?

Yes. A fit note (sick note) issued by a private clinician carries the same weight as one issued by an NHS GP. We can issue these at the time of your appointment if your clinician confirms it’s clinically appropriate.

What if I need follow-up care?

If follow-up is needed, we’ll arrange it. Whether that’s a follow-up consultation with us, a referral to a specialist, or returning to your NHS GP with a summary of your visit, we’ll make sure you leave with a clear plan.

Is it safe to use a private clinic?

Yes, provided you use a CQC registered clinic. Tamar Health is CQC registered, which means we operate under the same regulatory framework as any other registered healthcare provider in England. Your clinician is professionally registered, accountable, and working within a governed clinical environment.
